Common Boise Ant Species

PAVEMENT ANTS

Pavement ants are small, dark-brown ants (1/8 to 1/6 inch) that nest beneath concrete slabs, sidewalk expansion joints, and foundation edges—making them extremely common in Boise’s slab-on-grade construction. They trail through kitchens, pantries, and bathrooms, and re-entry is persistent unless treatment reaches both interior trails and exterior nesting sites.

CARPENTER ANTS

Carpenter ants are the most structurally damaging species in Boise. Large and dark-bodied, they tunnel through softened wood to build satellite colonies inside walls, crawlspaces, and attic voids. Boise’s mature tree canopy and older North End housing stock create ideal conditions. Early detection and bait-based colony elimination are critical before structural damage accumulates.

HARVESTER ANTS

Harvester ants are large red ants that build prominent mounds in Boise lawns, gravel borders, and foothills-adjacent properties. They are primarily outdoor pests, but during mating season, winged swarmers enter structures through rooflines and attic vents. Their sting is intensely painful, particularly when multiple bites occur.
