About Carpenter Ants in Boise

IDENTIFICATION

Western black carpenter ants (Camponotus modoc) are Boise’s most common structural pest ant. Workers are 1/4 to 1/2 inch long, solid black or bicolored black and reddish-orange. Queens reach 3/4 inch—the largest ant found in Idaho homes. They are primarily nocturnal and do not eat wood; they excavate smooth galleries through softened or moisture-damaged lumber.

DAMAGE & RISK

Carpenter ants cause structural damage by excavating galleries through sill plates, floor joists, wall studs, fascia, and attic framing. Damage accumulates silently over years—most homeowners discover it during renovation or when frass deposits become visible. Boise’s North End and East End homes are at highest risk due to housing age, mature tree canopy, and long-term irrigation moisture.

TREATMENT

Colony elimination—not surface spray—is the only effective approach. Barrier Pest Control uses slow-acting professional bait matched to carpenter ant foraging preferences, combined with targeted void treatment for confirmed interior nesting. Exterior perimeter treatment disrupts foraging trails and prevents re-entry from outdoor main colonies.
