About Harvester Ants in Boise

IDENTIFICATION

Western harvester ants (Pogonomyrmex occidentalis) are large reddish-brown ants (1/4 to 1/2 inch) that build dome-shaped mounds surrounded by a cleared vegetation ring one to three feet in diameter. They are seed-collecting outdoor pests—not kitchen or structural ants. Their sting is one of the most painful of any North American insect, and colonies burrow five to fifteen feet underground in Boise’s well-drained foothills soils.

RISK & DAMAGE

Harvester ants pose a direct sting risk to children, pets, and anyone who disturbs an active mound. Their venom is medically significant and multiple stings can cause serious reactions. Lawn and landscape damage from mound clearing and vegetation stripping can be extensive in properties with multiple colonies. Winged swarmers enter structures through attic vents and roofline gaps during Boise’s July–September mating season.

TREATMENT

Over-the-counter drenches and boiling water fail because harvester ant queens burrow beyond surface treatment reach. Barrier Pest Control uses harvester ant-specific granular bait that workers collect as part of normal seed foraging, carrying it directly to deep gallery chambers near the queen. Combined with a non-repellent mound treatment and perimeter barrier, this approach eliminates the colony without driving it underground or triggering relocation.
