Common Treasure Valley Spiders

BLACK WIDOW SPIDER

Black widow spiders are easily recognized by their dark, shiny bodies and the characteristic red hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen. They spin irregular webs under woodpiles, along foundation walls, in meter boxes, and in thick vegetation and may occasionally enter garages or homes. Their bite is dangerous, and the venom is considered one of the most potent among spiders in North America.

HOBO SPIDER

Hobo spiders are one of the more feared spiders in the Treasure Valley. A large hobo can reach an overall length of up to 2 inches. They weave funnel-like webs in rubbish piles, near foundations, under wood or rocks, and in vegetation. Hobos are typically brown to light brown, hairy, and fast-moving, with two prominent palps that look like tiny boxing gloves at the front of the body. Bites have been associated with painful, localized tissue damage, so suspected bites should be evaluated by a medical professional.

JUMPING SPIDERS

Jumping spiders are easily recognized by their prominent front eyes and their quick, jumping movements. They vary in color from black to brown to gray and are usually hairy. Jumping spiders are active hunters and do not rely on webs to catch prey; instead, they stalk and pounce on insects. They are not considered dangerous to humans and are typically nuisance pests found in vegetation, on exterior walls, near windows, and in other sunny areas where insects are present.

WOLF SPIDERS

In Idaho, wolf spiders are often mistaken for hobo spiders. Although the coloration is similar (light to dark brown), wolf spiders are generally less dangerous. They are typically a bit smaller than hobos, with adults usually just over an inch in length. Wolf spiders are hunting spiders that rely on speed rather than webs to capture prey. They are often found under rocks, firewood, and debris. Their bites can cause redness and mild irritation but are far less serious than those of hobos or black widows.
