Yellow Bellied Marmots, also known in Idaho as ‘Rock Chucks’, are a common rodent to most all of Idaho. It is a large rodent, weighing 4-11 pounds.
They like to live in rocky areas, preferably on slopes, though they can be found almost anywhere. They feed on grasses and forbs.
Rock Chucks create large burrows (up to 12 inches or so in diameter) that go up to 15 feet long into the ground. They use the burrows as protection and shelter, and as a place to hibernate during the winter.
Mating takes place during the spring, and after the 30 day gestational period, females will give birth to 3-8 pups.
Rock Chucks, or Yellow Bellied Marmots can be destructive, creating burrows in undesirable areas, eating plants that are desirable, and otherwise creating an unsightly landscape in otherwise carefully manicured areas.
Live trapping is the best and most humane method for ridding your home or business of Rock Chucks. We’ve done it for years, and have a great track record. If you have a problem with these rodents, give us a call, we’ll take care of you!
