Why Billbugs Are a Bigger Problem in Treasure Valley Lawns Than You’d Think

Most homeowner advice on billbugs assumes a single species with a single, predictable life cycle. That’s not the full picture here. A University of Idaho turf entomology field study monitoring billbug activity across Treasure Valley golf courses and home lawns confirmed multiple species present regionally — bluegrass, Rocky Mountain, and hunting billbug, along with the first documented case of Phoenician billbug on cool-season turf. That matters for treatment: species can differ in overwintering behavior and egg-laying windows, so a program built only around textbook bluegrass billbug timing can miss part of the problem. It also matters because Treasure Valley lawns are especially exposed. Kentucky bluegrass — the region’s dominant home lawn turf, along with tall fescue and perennial ryegrass — is exactly the cool-season grass billbug larvae feed on, and University of Idaho Extension notes adults become active as soon as soil temperature reaches about 55°F, typically early to mid-May.

In their adult form, billbugs do very little damage to lawns. Adults overwinter, and as spring temperatures rise, mated females begin laying eggs in plant stems around mid-May. Roughly 7 to 14 days later, white, legless, brown-headed larvae — shown below — emerge and begin feeding on stems, roots, and crowns. This feeding is what causes the real damage. It typically becomes visible from late June through late August or early September, and by that point, billbug treatment options are far more complex and less effective.

It’s genuinely difficult — realistically, impossible — to predict whether your lawn will have a billbug problem this season, since damage only becomes obvious after it’s already done. Prevention is the more reliable path. Two applications of a systemic insecticide, timed for May-June, successfully prevent a billbug infestation for the remainder of the growing season in the great majority of Treasure Valley lawns we treat. Larvae feeding on treated turfgrass die quickly, protecting the lawn through the season.

1. Billbug damage tends to show up spotty, not in one general area — that’s a key difference from a watering issue, which usually spreads more uniformly.
2. Find where unhealthy grass meets healthy grass. Peel back a section to reveal the roots and soil underneath, and look for larvae — they’re easy to spot: white and about an eighth of an inch long.
3. If the turf won’t peel back easily by hand, use an old knife to cut an open-ended square, roughly 8-10 inches, to make lifting the section easier.
4. Check 3 or 4 different areas of the lawn — damage isn’t always uniform across the whole yard.
