About Pavement Ants in Boise

IDENTIFICATION

Pavement ants (Tetramorium caespitum) are 1/8 to 1/6 inch, dark brown to black with lighter legs and antennae. They maintain highly defined foraging trails along baseboards, under appliances, and behind cabinet toe kicks. Winged reproductives swarm in late spring, sometimes appearing in large numbers on driveways and sidewalks during colony expansion.

WHERE THEY NEST

Pavement ant colonies nest beneath concrete slabs, expansion joints, foundation edges, and landscape pavers—placing the nest directly under the surfaces of Boise’s slab-on-grade homes. Freeze-thaw cycles that widen concrete cracks each winter progressively create new nesting and entry routes. Irrigation near foundations keeps sub-slab soil moist and attractive year-round.

TREATMENT

Surface sprays scatter pavement ant colonies without reaching the queen, producing recurring infestations. Barrier Pest Control uses slow-acting professional bait placed directly into active foraging trails. Workers carry the bait to the queen and brood beneath the slab, producing complete colony collapse within 24–72 hours for most residential infestations.
