Voles in Boise

MEADOW VOLES

Meadow voles are the most common vole species in Boise. They’re stocky, brown-furred rodents (4 to 7 inches including a short tail) with rounded bodies and small ears mostly hidden in fur. They live in lawns, mulched beds, and ground cover, creating surface runways through grass at ground level. They eat plant material—grass roots, bulbs, and the bark of young trees and shrubs.

VOLE DAMAGE

Vole damage is mostly winter damage discovered in spring. Voles tunnel under snow cover all winter, creating dead surface runways revealed when snow melts. They gnaw bark at the base of young trees and shrubs, often girdling and killing them. Bulb plantings, perennial root systems, and root vegetables are also primary targets. A heavy vole population can damage thousands of dollars of landscaping in one winter.

POPULATION CYCLES

Vole populations cycle dramatically. Some years are mild; others see explosive growth and severe damage. Properties with no problem last year can have heavy infestations this year as cycles peak. This is why ongoing monitoring matters more for voles than for some other pests—and why properties in high-pressure areas (foothills-adjacent, agricultural-edge, dense landscaping) benefit most from recurring service plans.
