Gophers and Moles in Boise

POCKET GOPHERS

Pocket gophers are stocky, brown-furred rodents (5 to 14 inches) with large incisors and fur-lined cheek pouches. They feed on roots, bulbs, and tubers, killing plants from below. Signature signs are fan-shaped soil mounds with a visible plug at one edge. A single gopher can produce 200 to 300 mounds per year, and they preferentially target gardens, ornamental beds, and irrigated landscape areas.

MOLES

Moles are insectivores (not rodents) that feed on grubs and earthworms. They produce volcano-shaped soil mounds without a visible plug, plus raised ridges across the lawn surface where they tunnel hunting for grubs. Mole damage is structural to the lawn but doesn’t kill plants directly—plants die when their roots are disturbed by tunneling, not because moles eat them. Heavy mole pressure usually indicates a grub problem.

WHY DIY FAILS

Both gophers and moles spend nearly all their time underground. Surface treatments, repellents, sonic devices, and grocery-store traps almost never work. Effective control requires direct burrow targeting with professional equipment placed inside active tunnel systems—a method that requires the right tools, experience reading tunnel patterns, and follow-up monitoring. Most retail products are ineffective by design.
