Common Stinging Insects We Handle in the Treasure Valley

PAPER WASPS

Paper wasps range from ¾ to 1 inch long and are commonly identified by their slender black and yellow bodies. They build umbrella-shaped nests made of a paper-like material, often attached to eaves, gables, decks, fencing, and porch ceilings. While paper wasps help control other insects, they are territorial and will aggressively defend their nest. Because they can sting repeatedly, professional removal is recommended when nests are close to human activity.

YELLOW JACKETS & HORNETS

Yellow jackets and hornets are among the most aggressive stinging insects in Idaho. Colonies can number in the hundreds and are commonly found underground, inside wall voids, attics, crawl spaces, and utility boxes. They are attracted to sugars and proteins and often become a problem during outdoor activities. Their ability to sting repeatedly makes professional treatment critical for safety.

HONEY BEES

Honey bees are beneficial pollinators and are generally not aggressive unless their hive is threatened. Problems arise when colonies establish themselves inside walls, chimneys, or other structural voids. Because improper treatment can cause damage and unnecessary loss, correct identification is essential. If you suspect honey bees, avoid spraying or sealing entry points and contact a professional for guidance.
