Spring Pests in the Treasure Valley
As of 3:24 pm on Monday, March 20, 2023 (the day that I am writing this), spring will arrive…well, as much as Idahoan springs actually arrive in March. Despite the persistent cold and wet weather that this year has brought us, it is important to acknowledge that the true spring season is right around the corner. With that comes the increase in pest presence across the board and a frustrating amount of change over the next few months.
In addition to increased spiders, wasps, etc., certain pests are tied explicitly to the Spring. The first of these are clover mites. Clover mites are tiny arachnids that feed on green, leafy plants such as grass. They are especially active during the springtime because of the cool temperatures and wet environment, which encourages the greening of the plants around your home. Although harmless, these mites can come inside in droves during the springtime and leave a small red spot when squished. To help prevent them from entering your home,
- Inspect the seals around doors and windows to ensure there are no gaps for pests to slip into,
- Create at least a 2-foot plant-free perimeter around the base of the home to not attract them, and
- Plant plants the repel pests, such as clover mites. Additionally, treatments of the home and yard can reduce the population in a way that keeps them out of the home.
Ants are also a nuisance in the Spring. Although they are a problem literally all year long, they pose two unique problems in the Spring. First, winged ants may appear around your home. These are not a new species of ant, but the reproducing caste of the ant society. If you are concerned about what specific species of ant it is, you can always bring a sample into our office to have it identified. Second, frequent weather changes cause the number of ant sightings to increase dramatically. As the temperature warms throughout the day, ants become more active outside but can be driven inside as the weather cools back off during the night. In both cases, a Quarterly Pest Control program with Barrier Pest Control can help control the ants in and around your home.
