About Hobo Spiders in Nampa

IDENTIFICATION

The hobo spider (Eratigena agrestis) is a medium-to-large funnel-web spider, roughly 1/2 inch in body length with a leg span up to 1.75 inches. It is light to medium brown with uniformly colored legs—no banding at the leg joints—and faint chevron markings on the abdomen. Definitive identification requires microscopic examination; the most reliable field distinction is the flat, funnel-shaped web built at ground level in basement and garage corners.

BITE RISK

Hobo spider bites cause localized pain, redness, and swelling but are not considered medically serious. The historic association between hobo spiders and necrotic wounds has not been supported by subsequent research—the CDC updated its guidance in 2017 to reflect this. The practical concern in Nampa homes is volume: a basement with multiple established funnel webs and active egg sacs will grow into a significant infestation through the fall migration window if left untreated.

TREATMENT

Effective hobo spider control targets the specific low-level harborage zones where populations establish—basement floor perimeters, crawlspace framing, under-stair areas, and garage floor edges. Barrier removes existing funnel webs and egg sacs, applies residual product to harborage surfaces, treats crawlspace interiors where present, and applies an exterior perimeter treatment to reduce the migration pressure driving fall intrusion.
