Common Nampa Ant Species

PAVEMENT ANTS

Small, dark-brown ants that nest under slabs and expansion joints — the top ant complaint in Nampa’s newer subdivisions around North and South Nampa, where construction grading creates ideal nesting gaps. They trail into kitchens and bathrooms and keep coming back unless both interior and exterior nests are treated.

ODOROUS HOUSE ANTS (SUGAR ANTS)

Small, uniformly brown-to-black ants — sometimes called sugar ants — identified by the rotten-coconut smell they give off when crushed. A top complaint in Nampa’s older Downtown grid, where irrigation and landscaping moisture draw them in. Spraying disturbs the colony and can cause it to split into new nests rather than die off.

CARPENTER ANTS

Large, dark-bodied ants that tunnel into softened wood to build satellite colonies. Present in Nampa, most often in Downtown’s older homes and mature landscaping, though a less frequent complaint here than in Boise. Left untreated, they cause structural damage that can go unnoticed for years.

HARVESTER ANTS

Large red ants that build mounds in lawns and open ground, most often on Nampa properties bordering agricultural land or irrigation canals. The least common of Nampa’s four ant species, mostly an outdoor pest, but winged swarmers enter structures during mating season and their sting is notably painful.
