BARRIER PEST CONTROL - A HISTORY

Barrier Pest Control owners Mike and Kirk Dean grew up on a farm in nearby Grand View, Idaho. The youngest of 8 children, they enjoyed playing sports, the outdoors, family trips, and working together. Always close, the two brothers were together doing something.

Mike went to school at Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho. He served an LDS mission to the small south Pacific island of Vanuatu, where he learned a form of pigeon English called Bislama. Upon returning, he attended Idaho State University and received a degree in Business Management. While at Pocatello, he met and married Annikan, who ironically hates Star Wars Movies! While completing his degree, Mike was recruited to sell pest control services during the summers in the South. After stints in Florida, Texas, & North Carolina, Mike became interested in and learned much about the pest control industry.

After high school, Kirk served two years as an LDS Missionary in Uruguay, South America. After his mission, Kirk went to college at Brigham Young University and married his high school sweetheart, Ashley.

In the spring of 2006, Mike & Annikan visited newly married Kirk & Ashley at college over a weekend. Almost jokingly, they said that they should start a pest control company. Talks became more serious, plans were made, and… Barrier Pest Control was born.

Since then, the Barrier family has grown—not only to include Mike & Annikan’s five children, or Kirk & Ashley’s four (and counting), but also to include all of Barrier’s wonderful technicians, salespeople, office staff, and their families.

Since the beginning, Mike & Kirk wanted to build a company that emphasized the customer experience above all else. To achieve that goal, they soon realized that the key to providing this experience was not about gimmicks or clever marketing ploys but simply taking care of people in simple ways.

These simple ways certainly aren’t national news: always answering the phone, returning after-hour messages promptly, calling a day in advance to schedule an appointment, and always being on time are just a few examples. But by consistently delivering on these basic but often neglected items, Barrier has been appreciated over the years by thousands in the Boise area and hopes to do so for many more years.

From Idaho Farm Roots to Local Pest Control Experts

Long before Barrier Pest Control had trucks on the road or technicians in uniforms, it began as an idea formed from those early days on the Grand View farm. Growing up in rural Idaho taught Mike and Kirk the value of hard work, honesty, and following through on commitments. Those same principles now guide how Barrier serves families across the Treasure Valley and Magic Valley.

What started as two brothers with a vision has grown into a trusted local company that understands Idaho’s unique climate, seasonal pests, and the needs of homeowners from Boise to Twin Falls. The lessons learned in the fields and barns of Grand View now show up in every home Barrier treats: pay attention to details, do the job right the first time, and always treat people with respect.

Growing a Family-Owned Idaho Business

Like many small businesses, Barrier Pest Control was built from the ground up. In the early years, Mike and Kirk did it all—knocking doors, scheduling services, answering phones, performing treatments, and handling paperwork late into the night. There were no shortcuts, no national backing, and no guarantees—just faith, effort, and a commitment to serve their neighbors well.

Over time, as more customers trusted Barrier with their homes, the team began to grow. Technicians were hired and trained, office staff joined the company, and the “Barrier family” expanded beyond blood relatives. Many team members have been with the company for years, and several have brought their own family members onboard, strengthening the tight-knit, family-oriented culture.

Today, Barrier Pest Control is still locally owned and operated. Mike and Kirk remain actively involved in the day-to-day operations, training, and direction of the company. They are proud that Barrier’s growth has come not from high-pressure sales tactics but from word-of-mouth referrals and long-term relationships with customers.
