About Black Widow Spiders in Boise

IDENTIFICATION

The western black widow (Latrodectus hesperus) is the only medically dangerous spider native to Boise and the Treasure Valley. Females are glossy jet black with a distinctive red or orange hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen. Body length is approximately 1/2 inch; total size including legs reaches about 1.5 inches. Males are smaller, lighter in color, and cannot deliver venom through human skin. Webs are irregular and tangled, built close to the ground in dark, undisturbed locations.

BITE RISK

Black widow venom contains alpha-latrotoxin, a neurotoxin that triggers severe muscle cramping, abdominal rigidity, elevated blood pressure, and systemic pain. Symptoms can develop within 15 to 60 minutes of a bite and may last 24 to 72 hours. Children, elderly individuals, and those with heart or respiratory conditions face the highest risk of serious complications. A black widow bite is a medical emergency. Call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) and seek emergency care immediately if bitten.

TREATMENT

Effective black widow control targets harborage zones directly—garages, crawlspaces, deck structures, and utility access areas—not just perimeter spraying. Barrier Pest Control removes webs and egg sacs, applies residual product to the specific surfaces black widows contact, and treats the exterior perimeter to prevent re-establishment from surrounding habitat. Egg sac removal is critical: a single sac contains 200–300 eggs, and leaving them in place negates the treatment.
